Panaji: The fisheries directorate in Goa is set to introduce a pioneering initiative to modernize fish sales in the state by rolling out electric fishing vehicles (EVs). These new three-wheeler EVs are equipped with solar power and electric charging capabilities, ensuring sustainable and environmentally friendly operations. They also feature refrigerated compartments to maintain the freshness of the fish and a mobile sales platform for seafood transactions.
According to a department official, this is the first EV specifically designed for fish sales in Goa. The innovative model allows for the sale of raw fish during the day and fried fish in the evening, catering to a diverse range of consumer preferences. The fisheries department will soon be inviting interested entrepreneurs to apply for the opportunity to operate these vehicles, while also encouraging fish vendors and farmers to explore this new business avenue.
The launch will see the debut of ten of these advanced vehicles on the streets, with plans to introduce an additional 40 vehicles later this year. This initiative is part of a broader effort to support local fish vendors and improve the seafood supply chain in Goa.
The ten EVs will be unveiled on Monday during the Narali Poornima celebrations, a traditional festival observed by fishing communities along the western coast of India, including Goa. The festival serves as a symbol of devotion to the sea and protection, marking the beginning of the fishing season in the state.
